Pilates at Home: How to Set Up a Safe, Non-Slip Space
Practising Pilates at home is a brilliant way to stay consistent between studio classes. All you need is a little space, a mat and a few simple precautions to keep every session safe and comfortable.
Choose the Right Spot
Find a clear area at least the length of your mat plus an arm's reach on either side. Move furniture, cables and anything you could knock or trip over during leg circles and roll-downs.
Start With a Stable Surface
A firm, flat floor is best. If you have laminate or wooden floors, place your mat on a thin rug or non-slip underlay so it stays put during dynamic moves.
Invest in a Good Mat
A slightly thicker mat (around 6 to 10mm) cushions your spine during rolling exercises and protects your knees and wrists.
Don't Forget Your Feet
Bare feet can slip on hard floors, and regular socks are even worse. Grip socks give you the traction you need for standing work, lunges and balance exercises, while keeping your feet warm on chilly floors.
Add a Few Simple Props
A Pilates ring for inner thigh and arm work.
A resistance band to add challenge to leg and arm exercises.
A small ball for core and posture support.
Set the Mood
Good lighting, fresh air and a calming playlist make it easier to switch off and focus on your breath and movement.
Make It a Habit
Even 15 to 20 minutes a few times a week makes a difference. Pull on your favourite Grip & Flow socks, roll out your mat and enjoy your practice.
